Martin's earlier lecture series have been a big hit with Arts Centre audiences. This is the third in his new series of talks at Letchworth.
American painting shows the influence of the Impressionists, the Pre-Raphaelites and Russian artists. But there is also a distinct American style to appreciate.This lecture take a broad view of the vast range of traditional and contemporary talent from the 19th and 20th centuries. Artists shown include: Homer, Hopper, Inness, Johnson, Knight, Metcalf, Potthast, Richards, Rockwell, Rose, Sargent, Sheeler, Sloan, Spencer, Steele, Whittredge.
Martin Smith's art lectures have been a resounding success. In Watford, people have had to be turned away and he has drawn large and appreciative audiences at Letchworth. They were summed up by one delighted participant: "I am not easy to please, and I suppose I wasn't expecting much, but I was astonished at the inspirational way he put across his subject. He is an exceptional teacher."
