In the culturally stormy late 60s and early 70s I studied painting and was exposed to the great changes taking place: Colour-field, which had just replaced Abstract Expressionism, was pushed off its pedestal by Pop-art and Conceptual art. Many artists expressed themselves in highly original pieces or events. But for me something vital seemed to disappear. The artistic direction seemed to shift from an idealistic approach to a popular commercial one.
My search for my 'real art' started.
I recognised how art can have its roots in the universal through an understanding of its main player: colour.
I studied art and its workings in colour and for many years I taught this and History of Art to adults and teenagers.
Whilst raising a family, writing and illustrating craft-books and teaching, I have always had some time and space to work on my painting. But since my sons grew up and more recently with my teaching somewhat reduced, painting again started to take central stage.
Of late I have been working hard to break out of some outgrown moulds and after many years of watercolour I rekindled my old love for non-figurative oil painting. My aim is to reach a depth of colour through thin, transparent glazes. In the Zodiac series of 2006 I started to explore various form gestures resulting from colour impulses. This was followed by a more personal, emotional approach with the soul pictures. Even landscapes have reappeared, but this time around as two- dimensional nature moods.
These paintings should not be seen as illustrations of ideas or emotions. Art speaks immediately to our feelings in its own rich language of colour interplay, if we take the time to listen."
Alice Calcasola-van der List writes: "My passion is to create atmosphere using natural materials and flowers in a very different way. Nature is my main source of inspiration in all that I do.
Being Dutch and inspired by the big trend in Holland to get groups of ladies together making something special for their home or garden. I embarked on running Dutch Floral Design courses, for all levels, from my workshop at home. Always aiming to have fun, to encourage and to create an informal, non-competitive & cosy atmosphere.
AllinOneSeason has grown .... it caters for family/corporate functions and gets invited to run tutorial workshops at Capel Manor, London and other Floral Design Groups by request.
Whether you wish to come along and be encouraged at a workshop, for me to assist you with a special occasion or support and inspire you ....
Bread feeds the body, naturally, but ... flowers feed the soul."
