Acrylics and watercolours
A bright and vibrant exhibition of works in watercolour and acrylic by this local artist.
Born in Tottenham, north London, Terry Wood grew up in Potters Bar and now lives in Stotfold.
Terry, who says he has never stopped drawing from the age of 10, spent many years as a commercial artist for a variety of companies after leaving art school, while in his spare time he refined his skills in figure drawing and portraiture, and in his early 50s opted for further training through a degree in two-dimensional design.
Having long before abandoned oils for acrylic because of his “impatient personality”, he now works mainly in acrylic, watercolour and gouache, though recently he has considered returning to oil. He was also encouraged to use the despised palette knife after seeing it used with great effect in an exhibition in the US.
He admires Matthew Smith for his flower paintings and Botticelli for his wonderful “line” but is also a fan of Picasso and Modigliani. One of his favourite English artists is John Piper – an admiration reflected in his many topographical paintings, particularly of Venice.
Wood prefers a digital camera to a sketchbook – a choice he again attributes to his impatience. “I can’t sit around in front of a view being exasperated by the changing weather and light,” he says. “I frankly don’t have the time for all that.”
All the time he saves is put into producing many paintings of a very direct appeal. And with prices ranging from £55 to £85 there is something to suit every pocket.
